Max Giovagnoli, transmedia storyteller, and his “The sea in my veins”

Max Giovagnoli is the best-known transmedia storyteller and cross-media researcher in Italy. Author of “Cross-media. The new narratives” and many other books and essays, he’is screenwriter for tv/web fiction and novelist. Member of the editorial committee of Cartoons on the Bay festival, where he will moderate the “Cartoons and Advertising” conference and the first “Cross-media Animation and Games Summit” with international guest like Jeff Gomez, Henry Jenkins and Stephen Dinehart, he’s now involved in the experimental transmedia project named “Il mare in vena” (The sea in my veins) which will start with the omonymous shortmovie, shown next may in the “El Cairo Mediterranean Literary Festival” and in other international locations. But the movie is just part of the story, which will be entirely told in the novel published next autumn, but first performed in a storytelling road show hold in Italy during the summer. “Il mare in vena” will become then an enhanched book for iPad in the winter, and it has already been shot its pilot for a tv series as well. The story runs the adventures of an ADHD sixteen-aged boy and his young teacher, an amazing exchange of roles which will drive the two guys to a spicy brotherwood, passing through a funny breakaway from Italy to Ireland (and back).

Warren Spector, creator of Junction Point Studios (recently acquired by Disney Interactive), one of the most original and determinant role-playing game designer and video game designer n the world, best known for the cyberpuk video games System Shock and Deus Ex and also for the Disney adventure game Epic Mickey, will be one of the special guest of the italian “Cartoon on the bay Festival” organized by RAI (the italian, national broadcaster) and speaker for the first “CROSS-MEDIA AND INTERACTIVE ANIMATION SUMMIT” hold there next 9, april.

“Cross-media day” in Italy, 9 April

Next Saturday 9, April will be the cross-media day at Cartoos on the bay Festival hold in Rapallo, Italy. In its 15th edition, the festival will host the first CROSS-MEDIA AND INTERACTIVE ANIMATION SUMMIT organized by RAI (the italian, national broadcaster) in collaboration with Cross-media.it and Aiomi. ”First person shooters” of the transmedia-cross-media market and storytelling conference will be: Jeff Gomez (President & CEO, Starlight Runner Entertainment) Warren Spector (Vice President and Founder Junction Point), Henry Jenkins (video contribution, Provost’s Professor of Communication, Journalism, and Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California), Gordon Bellamy (Executive Director, International Game Developers Association), Stephen Dinehart (video contribution, transmedia storyteller and game designer) and many else. Max Giovagnoli and Marco Accordi Rickards, members of the editorial comittee of the festival, will moderate the two sessions of the conference.

It has been an honour, and such an amazing experience, to moderate and be part of the ”Cross-media & Animation” conference in Rapallo last saturday, 17 april. Jeff Gomez, President and CEO of Starlight Runner Entertainment, focused his speech on transmedia storytelling for cinema and advertising, Christy Dena, Director of Universe Creation 101, stressed her attention on the relationships between animation and cross-media using characters and fictional strategies, whilst Derrick De Kerkhove, Director of McLuhan Program in Toronto illustrated the physiology and psycology of animation in our brain.

How to create a transmedia bible, how to empower the bridging of contents between one media and the others, how to integrate our imaginery with the connective intelligence of the audience… lots and lots of suggestions to focus on next days!

The day before (friday, 17) Christy Dena, member of the international jury of “Cartoons on the bay” hold a masterclass on cross-media storytelling subjects focusing on the story and the most important techniques for cross-media storytelling that were really useful and precious for the audience.

It was great to me to be helpful with an informal interview with her during the meeting.

Cross-media: primo libro in USA e top list dei ricercatori mondiali

Esce in USA il primo libro dedicato alle forme di racconto e di promozione cross-mediali. Drew Davisdon, professore della Carnegie Mellon University di Pittsburgh arriva in libreria con “Cross-media Communications: An Introduction to the Art of Creating Integrated Media Experiences” (ETC Press) e raccoglie contributi da quelli che definisce i 32 autori, producer e ricercatori che stanno cambiando il modo di raccontare in tutto il mondo. Per l’Italia il nome è quello di Max Giovagnoli [nella foto].

Stephen King esplora il comics: “Skinner Sweet”

Stephen King debutta negli Usa con il suo primo fumetto, dove compare come autore e creatore di un terribile vampiro: Skinner Sweet, un rapinatore di banche e cowboy sociopatico del vecchio West, primo “succhiasangue” in terra americana. Dopo la collaborazione con la Marvel Comics, per l’adattamento di alcune sue storie, questa volta il re dell’horror all’americana ha prestato il suo genio creativo alla casa editrice statunitense Vertigo, una divisione del colosso Dc Comics per lettori over-18, dando vita ad una originale nuova serie di albi a fumetti intitolata “American Vampire”. King collaborerà per i primi cinque numeri, con lo scrittore ufficiale della serie Scott Snyder e con il disegnatore Rafael Albuquerque, ma la serie andrà avanti ancora per molto tempo a cadenza mensile. E se il successo arriverà, l’autore di “Carrie” e “Shining” è pronto a collaborare nuovamente. L’idea alla base del fumetto è che i vampiri americani si sono evoluti in modo diverso rispetto ai vampiri europei. Skinner Sweet, un fuorilegge sociopatico del selvaggio West, è il primo vampiro del nuovo continente. A differenza dei vampiri europei viene rinforzato dalla luce del sole e per via delle condizioni ambientali in cui è nato ha sviluppato denti da crotalo [Fonte: Arcadia Tv].
